Padre Island National Seashore, encompassing 130,434 acres, is the longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world. Mustang Island is a 20 mile long barrier island located north of Padre Island and is one of a string of barrier islands off the coast of Texas that stretches from Galveston to Mexico.
Mustang Island is the barrier island just east of Corpus Christi and was named for the wild horses that escaped the Spanish explorers from the early 1500’s. The Moorings is located in Port Aransas which is on the northern tip of Mustang Island, about thirty minutes from Corpus Christi via the recently raised J F K Causeway and is connected to the mainland by free ferry service to Aransas Pass. Port Aransas has a population of over 3,300 with a very active volunteer community. Governing is by a city council, mayor and city manager form of government.
